The Fire Department, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), and Professional Chimney Sweepers like ourselves, know the importance of removing creosote from your fireplace system. If you have had a chimney fire, than you know the havoc and destruction they can cause.
The use of one’s fireplace is a subject most of us have never been trained in. We can’t do this on one sheet of paper but we can provide information on creosote, the flammable material and major culprit in chimney fires. Creosote accumulates when any type of wood is burned and it does this because of incomplete combustion.
“How do you minimize its’ accumulation?” What is commonly agreed upon by wood experts is that the temperature of the fire, the quantity of smoke moving through the system, the type and dryness of wood, and the degree of oxygen allowed the fire, are the major variables which determine creosote build-up.
It is recommended by the NFPA and the CSIA to have your fireplace inspected annually by a Certified Chimney Sweep and cleaned if necessary. We look at the integrity of the whole fireplace system, as well as creosote accumulation. There can be hidden damage caused by earthquakes, structural settling, heat, cold, and moisture. If inspected annually, these problems can be rectified before becoming a major problem.
